Netzach
Foucault's PendulumNetzach is presented as a Sefirah with two related but distinct meanings: patient endurance and victory. Near the end of the novel, Casaubon applies both senses to his position as he waits in hiding at the Conservatoire, where his immediate advantage may be real even as the outcome remains uncertain.
Meanings of Netzach
Casaubon notes that some interpreters understand Netzach as endurance, forbearance, and constant patience; others read it as victory. The difference matters in the scene that follows: patience describes the prolonged test of waiting, while victory names Casaubon’s momentary advantage over the people he is watching. The Sefirah thus supplies a vocabulary for an outcome that has not yet settled into either triumph or defeat.
The Watch at the Conservatoire
After dozing fitfully until three, washing his face, and going to the Conservatoire, Casaubon recognizes that his remaining course is to enter the museum, stay after closing, and wait for midnight. A few hours before midnight, he is concealed in the periscope, watching and waiting. His position gives him an asymmetry of knowledge: he knows about the others, while they do not know about him. This is the first part of his scheme, and it has gone according to plan.
A Provisional Victory
Casaubon measures the word victory against the defeated figures surrounding him: the Diabolicals have mocked Belbo, Belbo has mocked the Diabolicals, and Diotallevi has been mocked by his own cells. Against this chain of reversals, Casaubon considers himself, for the moment, the only victor. The qualification is essential. His success is limited to the first part of a scheme, achieved by concealment and foreknowledge, not mastery of what comes next.
From His Scheme to the Plan
The scene turns on Casaubon’s distinction between his own plan and the Plan. He does not know whether the next part will proceed according to his scheme or according to the Plan, which is no longer his. Netzach’s double meaning therefore frames not a secure victory but a test of endurance under uncertainty: Casaubon has gained a temporary advantage, while the larger design threatens to subsume the purpose he intended to control. The shift from confident surveillance to that unresolved question makes the Sefirah an emblem of victory that may already be slipping away.
